A Crooked Trail

Forever moving, the narrative leads through semi-wilds, touching towns and cities, and on deep into wilderness itself. In it we have the crackling of campfires, the raging of storms, the roaring of floods, the screaming of wild animals, the hissing and glare and smoke of prairie fires, the lowing and trampling of driven herds, the muttered growling of mobs, and the thunder and clatter of the wild midnight ride. There are perils from beasts of prey, perils from swollen streams, perils from cattle thieves and desperadoes, vigilantes, and perils even from officers and courts of law. Settlers and ranchmen, out-laws and sheriffs, cowboys, soldiers and rangers, and vengeful mobs march across these pages with life-like naturalness.
