Susie has left her Pennsylvania home to help at her brother Steven’s Amish Tennessee farm as Steven’s wife, Annie awaits a new baby. — While Susie is recovering from an accident, she reads a book about Betsey of Hammer Creek in Lancaster County. A bachelor in Upper Canada invites Betsey to join a Conestoga wagon caravan going there soon after 1800.

Her party deals with struggles, adventures, blessings, and storytelling on their way across the Alleghenies and the mighty Niagara. Finally, they arrive in the new Mennonite settlement where Jemuel awaits Betsey.

Courtship follows, but trouble arises. Jemuel’s former girlfriend has tagged along to Canada and makes a play for Jemuel. Misunderstandings develop and readers will want happiness to come to that Home in the Wilderness.
