Down the Sabine

Henry Miller, author Lewis B. Miller’s father appears in this book as the character Jess Holloway. Born in Tennessee in 1830, Jess Holloway travels to Texas at 19 years of age, and after farming and overseeing a water mill for a year, hires himself out with three other companions to build a flatboat to carry five hundred bales of cotton down the historically prestigious Sabine River to New Orleans. Once the boat begins its fateful journey the crew picks up bales of cotton as farmers haul them out to the Sabine River. Join the journey as a constable and a shadow of the law are dragged off by an alligator; a woman and her baby disappear, and someone is knocked into an alligator’s jaws. These and a whole series of other exciting adventures will keep readers spellbound to the very end.
