Sarah lives in a village called Alexanderthal on the steppes of the Ukraine in southern Russia. As you read, picture yourself joining in with her activities. They make watermelon juice out of the abundant crop they harvest. Feel her apprehension and fears about attending school for the first time. Will she get scolded if she doesn’t understand a lesson? Become aware of her excitement and anticipation of a visit from her cousins. Another addition to each chapter is a recipe of some kind of food they ate back then.
Sarah in the Village is based on the childhood of Sarah Paul’s Durksen, the author’s maternal grandmother. These stories take place in the village of Alexanderthal in southern Russia in the Mennonite Molotschna Colony during the years 1904 and 1905. The author grew up hearing her mother, Clara Durksen Schnupp, tell many stories of Christian faith and love from her heritage and she longs to pass her grandmother’s childhood stories down the generations. This is Book #1 in the Mennonite Girl from Russia Series.
