The Barnaby Claim is based largely on the events Miller encountered while homesteading in Oklahoma.
He chose for his claim a strip of country between the Texas Panhandle and Colorado, the region known as No Man’s Land where he built a shack near Wild Horse Lake. This is where he encounters blizzards, prairie fires, and more hazards that are directly related to homesteading. Perhaps this is where the boy became a man.
This is a good novel full of detailed decriptions of the Oklahoma Panhandle country and the interesting decriptions of the Oklahoma Panhandle country and the interesting men and women who saettled inthe country.
