What if you could say, “It’s going to be okay” and really believe and know that it will be?
That’s the message of Psalm 23, one of the most recognized chapters in the Bible. Though written thousands of years ago, it still brings comfort to many facing trials and uncertainty. Each line points to a confident trust in the Lord, God.

When Jesus Christ came to earth in human form two thousand years ago, He demonstrated that He was the same “Lord” of Psalm 23.1 He was God in flesh, the Shepherd who arrived with the divine mission to rescue people from sin and death and lead them to eternal life in Heaven. (See: 1 John 10:30)

Let’s walk through Psalm 23 together and discover the hope and peace that Jesus offers.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1

In a world where we often feel unsettled, the very first line of Psalm 23 sets a secure foundation. Peace in every circumstance can be yours through a trusting relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

When Jesus walked this earth, He saw the awful condition of the people around Him and had “compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.”2

As the “Good Shepherd,” Jesus laid down His life to rescue us from the power of sin and to offer eternal life. He said: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”3 Through His sacrifice, you too can receive forgiveness and the abundant life He promises.4

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:2

Do you want rest for your weary soul? The Lord invites you to turn and follow Him.5 Jesus promises that, “He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst”6

When you let Him lead, He fulfills this promise of renewed, satisfied, spiritual life through Him.

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:3

Apart from Jesus, our souls are utterly lost on paths of sin that only lead to death and judgment.7 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way.”8

Jesus came to restore our souls. When you trust Him for forgiveness and salvation from sin, He will give you a new spirit and lead you on new paths as you walk with Him: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”9

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

It’s no secret that life can be hard—very hard. We will face things so overwhelming that we’ll wonder how we’re going to get through them. Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”10

Yes, you will be touched by the shadows of evil in this life, but He will never leave you to walk alone. He will guide, protect, and comfort you each step. “‘O Death, where is your sting?’ … thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”11 (See: 10John 16:33; 111 Corinthians 15:55, 57)

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Psalm 23:5

With Jesus Christ as your Shepherd, you do not have to fear what anyone on earth can do to you. He promises protection, strength, and safety in this life and for eternity in Heaven.12

In His presence, we experience His never-ending love and abundance of blessings.13

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6

If you are still burdened by sin and feeling like a lost sheep, turn to Jesus. He is the Shepherd who left everything to find you and bring you to safety. When you call out to Him for rescue, all of Heaven will celebrate.14

His goodness and mercy will sustain you here on earth with a living hope of eternal life in Heaven with Him when this life is over.15

Is the Lord your Shepherd?
Jesus wants to be your Shepherd—guiding you and generously providing everything you need. With Him as the centre of your life, you will “want” for nothing and won’t need to worry or fear, whatever may come.

Have you trusted in Jesus for forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life? With Him as your Savior and Shepherd, you can know:

“It really is going to be okay.”

“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”16

“For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd … of your souls.”17 (See: 16John 3:16; 171 Peter 2:25)
