Cripple of Rottenstein

Poor Jacob, said the young pastor, as he prepared for the funeral, who will follow you to the grave? Who will shed tears over you? The church had to care for you. You have no relatives in the whole village. Poor cripple, if no one else weeps over you, I will.
With astonishment he watched the large funeral procession and the mourners’ deep emotion. Afterward he invited the lingering ones to the parsonage and listened as they, one by one, told how the cripple’s compassion had shaped their lives.
