  Henry Miller, author Lewis B. Miller’s father appears in this book as the character Jess Holloway. Born in Tennessee in 1830, Jess Holloway travels to Texas at 19 years of age, and after farming and overseeing a water mill for a year, hires himself out with three other companions to build a flatboat to carry five hundred bales of cotton down the historically prestigious Sabine River to New Orleans. Once the boat begins its fateful journey the crew picks up bales of cotton as farmers haul them out to the Sabine River.
