As Ralph was passing the post office, Collins, the postmaster came running out. His face was the color of ashes. “What’s the matter, Collins?” asked Ralph, somewhat startled by his ghastly appearance. “Matter enough!” panted Collins, “the registered mail bag has been stolen! When I opened it this morning it was full of bricks and old newspapers!”
Ralph was trapped. The window was out of the question, as it was too high from the ground. Escape by the door without detection was impossible. Looking hurriedly around he again caught sight of the closet. The next instant he was inside; holding the door shut.
